On the 27th of June 2024, two patients got a new lease of life when they both underwent a successful liver transplant operation at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital.
KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital is well-known center for transplantation. Adding another feather in its cap, the hospital performed two liver transplantation surgeries on a single day when two liver donations happened on the same day. The first liver was donated by a family at SDM Hospital Dharwad where a 60-year-old person was declared brain dead by doctors. His immediate family was kind enough to donate his organs – liver and kidneys. A team of liver transplant surgeons led by Dr Sudarshan Chaugale along with the support staff from KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital got the liver from Dharwad to Belgaum through the green corridor in one hour. The district administrator and police department’s help was invaluable during this transfer. The liver transplantation operation was performed on a 63-year-old male patient from Mangalore who was registered for liver transplantation at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital.
The second liver donation was done by the family of a 21-year-old male patient from Murgoad (savadatti) at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital who was declared brain dead after he sustained a fall. The second liver transplantation was done on a 50-year-old policeman from Bagalkot, who was registered for liver transplantation surgery at KLE KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital. His transplant surgery was a very major surgery requiring long hours and specialized ICU care. Performing two such surgeries on a single day is a Hercules task. It required four liver transplant surgeons, a specialized team of anesthesiologists, a large group of specialized nursing staff, and trained coordinators.
