Kannadama News has made this special story- In a tragic turn of events, allegations have emerged that due to negligence within Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), 41 newborns have died in the NICU over the past three months, reportedly due to delays in oxygen delivery. The delays have been attributed to a damaged air compressor, critical to the oxygen supply, which has not been replaced since it first malfunctioned in August.
Clarifications from BIMS
The process remains incomplete despite BIMS’s initial efforts to address the issue by calling for quotations on September 4. An Agency of Bapat Galli, Belagavi, was permitted to supply the replacement air compressor as of September 15. Yet, as of October 24, the necessary purchase was not finalized, leaving the facility to operate without this crucial equipment.
The delay has raised serious concerns among parents and the community, many of whom question why a provisional tender for the air compressor was not issued given the situation’s urgency. Monthly records reflect a staggering toll on vulnerable newborns, with 12 deaths in August, 18 in September, and 11 more through October 24.

As calls for accountability mount, we urge a thorough investigation to prevent further loss and safeguard the lives of Belagavi’s youngest residents.
