In a significant move to honour historical and cultural figures, the Cantonment Board finalized the renaming of 12 roads within its jurisdiction during a meeting held on Thursday, December 12, at the Board Hall. Brigadier and Chairman Joydeep Mukherjee, CEO Rajeev, board member Sudhir Tupekar, and other officials attended the meeting.
Among the renamed roads, High Street will now bear the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Additionally, three roads were renamed following public objections and suggestions. Notable changes include:
North Telegraph Road renamed as Belawadi Mallamma Road
Smart Road renamed as Martyr Wing Commander Hanmantrao Sarathy Road
Picket Road renamed as Lance Nayak Hanumanthappa Road

Three parks were also renamed to honor prominent personalities:
Queen’s Garden renamed as Bhagini Nivedita Garden
Post Garden renamed as Gangubai Hangal Garden
Excise Garden renamed as Bhimsen Joshi Garden
Of the 34 roads under Cantonment limits, objections and suggestions were invited from the public. A total of 72 responses were recorded, with 60 supporting the renaming decisions. Objections were raised against a few names, leading to revisions in three road names.
Several representations were submitted, proposing the inclusion of war heroes, freedom fighters, saints, poets, cricketers, and other notable figures from Karnataka. One representation requested retaining the name of Nolan Marg, while another suggested naming a circle at the Khanapur Road and Havelock Road junction as Ambedkar Circle, complete with an Ambedkar statue. Nominated Member Sudhir K. Tupekar formally supported this proposal in his submission to the board on December 5, 2024.
