Strong opposition has emerged against the proposed multi-storey parking lot in Bapat Galli Belagavi. Concerned about its impact, residents and traders held a meeting, where they unanimously decided to protest the project. They plan to submit a petition to the DC and the Municipal Corporation, urging them to reconsider the decision.

The corporation had made some markings last week after which the protest has emerged.

A municipal parking lot exists in Bapat Galli, and the new multi-storey facility is set to replace it under the Smart City scheme. The contract for the project has already been awarded, and MLA Raju Seth has even performed the Bhoomi Pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for the work. However, despite these developments, actual construction has yet to begin. Recently, officials from the Smart City Department and Land Records Department conducted site measurements, signaling the imminent start of construction. This has sparked concerns among local traders, who fear significant business losses due to the project..

The proposed parking structure is surrounded by commercial establishments on all four sides, making it a crucial part of Belagavi’s main market area. Traders argue that its construction could disrupt business activities and affect accessibility between Bapat Galli and Kadolkar Galli. Additionally, a protective wall was previously built on the Ramdev Galli side, further complicating connectivity in the area.

Residents and business owners insist that the existing parking lot should remain and that a multi-storey structure is unnecessary. They are particularly worried about the Build, Use, and Transfer model under which the project is being executed. While shops are planned as part of the development, there is a lack of clarity on how the parking facility will function and what impact it will have on local businesses and residents.

Despite official plans, the opposition remains firm—residents and traders are demanding that the multi-storey parking lot be scrapped altogether.
